History:
The history of rice in the US started in 1694 when a ship bound for England was forced into the Charleston Harbor for repairs. The captain gave the governor of the colony a handful of rough rice grains. From this small amount of seed, Charleston was soon supplying all the colonies with high-quality Carolina rice. Thus, rice and the rice spoon are symbols of Southern heritage.
The Charleston Rice Spoon has been a tradition in the South since the first settlers arrived in the Lowcountry. The long-handled spoon was originally used in England as a stuffing spoon. Because rice was a major crop in the Lowcountry, southern planters adopted its use to the serving of rice at the Charleston “two-o-clock dinner”.
